Joint choral evensong – Birstwith

The combined choirs of St Robert of Knaresborough, Pannal; St James, Birstwith; St Thomas á Becket, Hampsthwaite; Christ Church, High Harrogate; St John the Evangelist, Bilton, St Mary the Virgin, Goldsborough and St Thomas the Apostle, Killinghall sang a Choral Evensong at St James, Birstwith on Sunday June 17th.

Leading the service and singing the Office, was the Vicar, Chrissy Wilson, Abbie Palmer’s predecessor as Curate at St Roberts.  Our Vicar, John Smith, preached the sermon; the Vicar of St John’s Bilton read the first lesson and the Vicar of Christ Church, Harrogate led the intercessions.

The music Directors from four of the churches (Christine Alp (Christ Church); Kevin Paynes (St Robert’s); Sarah Warnes (St James’s) and Ruth Yarborough (St John’s)) shared the duties in conducting the combined choirs, While Christine Alp and Sarah Warnes alternated on the organ stool.  The music list was as follows:

IntroitWith a voice of singing - Martin Shaw
ResponsesSmith of Durham
CanticlesHubert Parry in D
AnthemGreater love hath no man - John Ireland
EnvoiThere is your face - Ruth Yarborough

A magnificent tea was provided by our hosts prior to the service, for which we are truly thankful.  Much hard work was put by Directors, clergy, choirs and congregation into planning, preparing, rehearsing and participating in an uplifting act of worship.  A really great occasion…….and hopefully to be repeated again in the future.
